IAPO granted special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council
We are delighted to share that in May 2014, IAPO was granted special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC). IAPO will now actively engage with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, the United Nations Secretariat, programmes, funds and agencies in a number of ways. This includes:

  • Attendance at meetings and access to the United Nations
  • Submission of formal statements and oral presentations to the Council and other UN bodies on relevant topics 
  • Taking part in consultations with ECOSOC and other UN bodies


Network to make a difference for people with pain

A new network has formed to improve understanding in pain management in patient-centred care. The International Network for Understanding Pain (INUP) held its first meeting during the 6th Global Patients Congress in March 2014.

14 representatives discussed how to build awareness around problems faced by people with pain, educate all across the continuum of care and work together internationally.

Report: Patient empowerment: for better quality, more sustainable health services globally

The result of a partnership by six All Party Parliamentary Groups in the UK, this report takes a global perspective on how to empower patients to play a more active role in their care. Drawing on case studies from low, middle and high income countries, including examples from IAPO members, it outlines how much the UK has to learn from overseas – and how these lessons should be applied. The report also highlights the UK’s strengths, its important role historically in supporting the global patient empowerment agenda, and how it can continue to play a leading role internationally.

Ascot, United Kingdom, 31 March 2014 – This was the call from Stephen Murby Wright, Consumers Health Forum of Australia during a multi-stakeholder panel discussion during the International Alliance of Patients’ Organization’s (IAPO) 6th Global Patients Congress, held in the UK on 29-31 March 2014. This was supported by Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), UK Government, in her keynote address, who emphasised the importance of patient and public involvement: ‘Healthcare research should be carried out by and with members of the public, not just done for or to the public.’

Innovation in Healthcare

Innovation in healthcare can refer to new discoveries, new applications of existing technologies, significant improvements to existing technologies, or new applications that combine existing or new technologies. Health technology refers to drugs, medical devices, diagnostic tests, clinical interventions, and methods for preventing or managing health conditions. In healthcare, valuable innovations can range from novel approaches to the use of professional time, through to the introduction of new surgical techniques, or original communication methods.

UCL Paper: Patients’ Needs, Medicines Innovation and the Global Public’s Interests
On 28 January 2014, University College London (UCL) School of Pharmacy published the report 'Patients’ Needs, Medicines Innovation and the Global Public’s Interests' which was funded by IAPO to provide patient advocates with background information on the issues, challenges and opportunities relevant to innovation and to promote open debate and dialogue. The paper will contribute to IAPO’s ongoing work in the area of access to health and universal health coverage including health financing and the role of innovation. Read the UCL Paper.

IAPO calls on WHO Member States to develop national action plans for the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases

Tuesday 21st January 2014 - 134th Session of the World Health Organization's Executive Board, Geneva.

IAPO delivered an intervention on Agenda Item 7.1: Follow up to the Political Declaration of the High-level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases. IAPO called on Member States to develop national action plans to ensure that progress is sustained at the national level, as well as highlighting the importance of patients being at the centre of all NCD strategies.

New Delhi, India, 17 December 2013 – “It is time that we came together as one voice” was the call from Dr Ratna Devi, CEO, DakshamA Health & Education Foundation, to patients’ organizations gathered at IAPO’s first multi-stakeholder seminar held in South-East Asia yesterday. The seminar entitled, ‘Meeting patients’ needs in South-East Asia – effective strategies for tackling NCDs and improving patient safety’, explored relevant issues in healthcare systems and patients’ needs from around the region.
