What is Patient-Centred Healthcare?: A Review of Definitions and Principles

In May 2004, IAPO conducted a consultation with its member patients' organizations.  The consultation investigated which healthcare policy issues were of most importance to them.  74% of respondents indictated that defining patient-centred healthcare was very relevant to their organization.

IAPO has developed a review paper providing an introduction to the concept of patient-centred healthcare: outlining current definitions and principles; examples of research studies on its impact; and some barriers to its practice.  It analyses the information, drawing out comments and questions pertinent to the concept of patient-centred healthcare.

Aims
The primary aims of the review were:

  • To provide useful reference material on patient-centred healthcare - to stimulate thought and discussion
  • To assist in identifying and promoting the principles of patient-centred healthcare - to produce a Declaration on Patient-Centred Healthcare

IAPO's Patient-Centred Healthcare Project
This review is part of IAPO's Patient-Centred Healthcare Project.  The aim of the project is to promote patient-centred healthcare around the world so that the rationale of patient-centred healthcare becomes entrenched in the minds of those working in healthcare and accepted in the same way as evidence-based care.

IAPO's Declaration on Patient-Centred Healthcare was launched to a positive reception at IAPO's Global Patients Congress 22-24 February 2006 and is available to read here.
