WHO has developed a discussion paper on the GPW12 outlining the priorities for its next programme of work. Establishing clear priorities will ensure that WHO’s performance can be effectively and objectively measured, and that WHO will be held accountable for its expected deliverables.
WHO put this paper out for consultation and IAPO developed a response after consulting with IAPO members. In its response, IAPO emphasised the need for a greater focus on patient-centred healthcare and patient involvement in the GPW12, including:
- A commitment to ensuring all policies, programs, and strategies are based on the fundamental right to patient-centred healthcare
- A greater focus on the role of WHO in supporting civil society and patient involvement in health prevention and the control of chronic diseases
- A commitment from WHO to invest in empowering individuals, communities and nations to define their own health goals and to develop their own solutions for sustainable healthcare and services
