Whilst in Mexico IAPO held three events, a half day meeting for local Mexican patients’ organizations, a multi-stakeholder seminar and reception focusing on patient-centred access to healthcare in the region and a two day workshop for IAPO member patients’ organizations from across Latin America.
Red de Acceso Mexican Patients’ Organization Meeting – 23 September 2013
Led by the Mexican network for patients’ organizations, Red de Acceso, this half day meeting brought together Mexican patients’ organizations to discuss the issues for patients in Mexico in accessing biological and biosimilar medicines and how they can work together to influence health policy in the country. One of the key outcomes of the meetings was the development of a questionnaire for Mexican patients on what they need from the national health system which will be published later in 2013.
Multi-stakeholder seminar and reception: Patient-centred access to healthcare in Latin America – 23 September 2013
The seminar brought together over 70 participants including patients’ organization representatives from across Latin America, policy-makers, healthcare professionals, civil society and industry. The seminar addressed three key issues related to access to healthcare in Latin America: non-communicable diseases (NCDs); health technology assessment (HTA) and biological and biosimilar medicines.
Dr Luis Ruben Durán Fontes, Under Secretary of Integration and Development of the Health Sector, gave the opening address and welcomed participants to Mexico. Speakers included: Dr Osvaldo Artaza Barrios, Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization Mexico; Ricardo Pérez Cuevas, Inter-American Development Bank; Dra Mireya López Gamboa, the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the Instituto de Cancerologia de Mexico; KP Tsang, IAPO Chair; Gisela Ayala, Mexican Diabetes Federation and Gustavo Adolfo Campillo, Antioquia Social Support Network Foundation, Colombia.
Dr. Oleg Chestnov, Assistant Director-General in Non-communicable Diseases & Mental Health at the World Health Organization (WHO) also shared a statement specifically developed for the seminar which shared information on global strategies to address NCDs. Read Dr. Chestnov’s statement

Regional patients’ organizations workshop – 24-25 September 2013
IAPO brought together its 18 member patients’ organizations from across Latin America, alongside a number of non-member patients’ organizations for a workshop with a focus on building the capacity of these patients’ organizations, especially in the area of NCD’s, HTA and biosimilar medicines, and also to strengthen the network in the region. One of the main outcomes of the workshop was a plan of action for the region for 2014 linked to both region specific and IAPOs global activities.
