How does my organization join?

To apply for membership of IAPO you simply need to complete the IAPO membership application form as follows:

1. Check that your organization meets the criteria for Full or Associate membership, available here.
2. Open the IAPO Membership Application form here.
3. Complete the form in Word and sign and date it.
4. Send your signed membership application form with the required supporting documents by email to membership@patientsorganizations.org or post to IAPO, 49-51 East Road, London N1 6AH, United Kingdom.

Your application will then be examined by IAPO's Membership Committee according to IAPO's Statutes and By-Laws.  Following the approval of your membership application your organization's membership will be confirmed following the payment of the annual membership fee.

Membership Fees
It is necessary for IAPO to have a membership fee to help support our core work and to diversify our income. We are aware of the financial pressures on all patients’ organizations and work to keep our membership fees at a sustainable level. Our membership fees have been set low to ensure that membership is open to a diverse range of patients' organizations around the world.  We offer a discount for payment of three year's of membership fees, to reduce transfer costs. Please contact IAPO for further information.

Member Consultations

An important feature of the way IAPO's Policy Framework is regular consultation with the members.  This ensures that the direction of the organization, its policies and activities are directly driven by and representative of the membership.

As well as consultations for specific activities throughout the year, IAPO conducts an annual Member Consultation to research the members current policy priorities, concerns and capacity building needs.

• In 2011 regional consultations took place with members in the African, Latin American, South-East Asian and Western-Pacific regions.  Please see World Regions for further information.
• In 2010 IAPO members took part in a consultation to provide feedback for IAPO's Membership Strategy 2010-2014.
• In 2008, IAPO members were consulted on a wide range of policy and capacity building issues. Their feedback helped IAPO to design the programme for the 3rd Global Patients Congress - see www.patientsorganizations.org/congress
• In 2007, the annual membership review focused on patient safety and led to the publication of IAPO's Patient Safety Toolkit.
• In 2006, IAPO undertook a review of Capacity Building services provided for members. Please click here to access our Capacity Building Strategy which is based on this consultation.
• May 2005 - Annual Member Consultation on training needs and policy priorities
• May 2004 - Member Consultation on policy priorities and the Global Patients Congress

Representing IAPO

Members are also invited to represent IAPO at international healthcare events.  IAPO is invited to attend many events across the world, many of which are high level events providing an important opportunity to represent the patient’s perspective in the global arena.
