Manifesto for Patient-Centred Healthcare

In 2004 and 2005 IAPO will be working with patients' organizations worldwide on a Manifesto for Patient-Centred Healthcare.

Benefits of the Manifesto

  • Brings patients and patients’ organizations together to produce a common statement, strengthening the worldwide patient organization movement
  • Clarifies the common principles of what patients want and how we define patient-centred healthcare to other stakeholders
  • Promotes the need to move towards patient-centred healthcare in all countries
  • Provides a framework for future collaboration between patients and other stakeholders to define and implement actions to improve healthcare

Developing the Manifesto (timescale to be confirmed)

Phase 1 - Initial Discussion and Planning

  • Initial discussion of the objectives, value and implementation of a Manifesto
  • Development of initial ideas for content
  • Development of review of definitions and principles of patient-centred healthcare

Phase 2 - Networker Consultation

  • Online consultation with IAPO Networkers on the priorities of the patients they represent
  • Online presentation of initial draft statements for discussion, criticism, comments and suggestions.
  • Formation of a representative Working Group to oversee the development of the Manifesto

Phase 3 - Public Consultation

  • Launch of first Public Draft of Manifesto for open discussion, criticism, comments and suggestions.
  • Particular emphasis on discussion and consultation with non-Networker patient groups.

Phase 4 – Finalisation and Publication

  • The Manifesto Working Group uses the results of the Public Consultation to finalise the Manifesto.
  • Manifesto is published online. Click here to see a copy.

Phase 5 - Endorsement and Action

  • Stakeholders are requested to show support for the Manifesto through their Endorsement.
  • Ideally, this collaboration could result in the production of “Guides to Action” for different stakeholders
e.g. Achieving Patient-Centred Healthcare: Actions for Health Professionals
e.g. Achieving Patient-Centred Healthcare: Actions for Pharmaceutical Companies
e.g. Achieving Patient-Centred Healthcare: Actions for Patients’ Organizations
  • By being continually open to public endorsement, comment and criticism, there will always be the opportunity to update the Manifesto.  Any alteration should be discussed and voted on by IAPO Members.

If you represent either a member or non-member patients' organization and are interested in getting involved with the Manifesto we would be delighted to hear from you - please email us.
