Kampala, Uganda, 3 November 2008 – The International Alliance of Patients’ Organizations has launched an advocacy toolkit for patient groups to inform and support their activities, advocating for improved patient safety, at a regional meeting of patient groups in Uganda. The toolkit, “Addressing Global Patient Safety Issues: An Advocacy Toolkit for Patients’ Organizations”, is the first multi-issue resource for patient groups, providing the means for patients and patients’ organizations to engage in the provision of healthcare and contribute to a quality and safe healthcare system, and a reduction in harm to patients.

Kampala, Uganda, 4 November 2008 – The International Alliance of Patients’ Organizations (IAPO) held a regional workshop in Africa yesterday. Bringing together 25 patient groups from seven African countries: Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana and Zimbabwe, the workshop represented a landmark in IAPO’s work to promote patient-centred healthcare globally. As a result of the workshop, these groups are developing strategies to overcome the shared challenges they face in accessing healthcare and participating in healthcare decision making. These joint efforts will strengthen the patient voice in Africa.

The DIA Patient Fellowship Programme is currently offering fellowships to 47 patients' representatives to participate in next year's DIA EUROMEETING 2009 in Berlin. It is an excellent opportunity for patients' representatives to learn more about regulatory affairs and interact with people from the industry, the European Medicines Agency, national authorities, and other patients' representatives

IAPO member, The South African Depression and Anxiety Group, won a silver award at the Commonwealth Awards held in Barbados for their innovative Speaking Books collection. The Speaking Books, are an educational tool for low literacy patients and rural, vulnerable and excluded people living in disadvantaged regions of South Africa. These Books effectively impart critical health care messages to rural citizens, people with low literacy skills, patients too sick to read, and to children.

Eucomed organized a 4-day conference, The MedTech Forum, in Brussels, during October 2008. IAPO CEO, Jo Groves attended the debate on Patient Safety: A global public health issue and a concern for Europe, held at the European Parliament. This event provided a broad perspective on the current debate on patient safety from relevant stakeholder perspectives. Among the participants were Lee McGill, European Commission, DG SANCO and Helen Hughes, WHO World Alliance Patient Safety, Patient Safety Programme.

Jo Groves, IAPO CEO, participated in a round table discussion on ‘Putting people centre stage: defining and implementing patient-centred diabetes care’. The 4th International DAWN Summit brought together physicians, nurses, psychologists, patient ambassadors, policy-makers and patient organization representatives to share experiences and best practice in diabetes education and patient support.
