At the end of July three of the founders of IAPO, Virginia Ladd, Myrl Weinberg and Albert van der Zeijden finished their terms as IAPO Governing Board Members. All three have been involved with IAPO since before our official registration in 1999 and have helped to shape the way we work today.

Bisi Bright, Chief Executive Officer of the Livewell Initiative (LWI) has shared information on their highly successful health fair, in Lagos, Nigeria, 4-5 June 2010. The fair was held in hope of increasing awareness of personal wellbeing, by helping participants become more informed of their health and incorporating a healthy lifestyle in their daily routine.

Dr. Dula Rusinovic-Sunara, President of the Croatian Association for Patients’ Rights (CAPR) has shared information on thier work. CAPR was established in March 1999, as a response to very poor interest in patients’ rights in Croatia, to inform the general public about existing patients’ rights and to teach people how to exercise these rights in Croatia and abroad.

IAPO Member, the Cochrane Consumer Network, have shared details of the Consumer Coordinator position available with the Cochrane Collaboration. The Cochrane Collaboration is an independent, not-for-profit, research organization that believes effective health care is created through equal partnerships between provider, practitioner, researcher and patient. The deadline for this position is 11 August 2010.

The Amgen Foundation is supporting the Patients| Choices| Empowerment competition with Ashoka's Changemakers to answer the question of how we can elevate patients’ voices to improve health outcomes globally. The aim of the competition is to foster innovations that empower the patient and provide avenues for informed decisions. These projects should not only tap the medical experience, knowledge, and wisdom of current and past patients, health care practitioners, and advocates but also work for people where they live, regardless of age, status, or education level.

We would like to share information on two calls for proposals that have been released by the European Commission Directorate General for Research as part of the FP7-Cooperation Health Research Theme. Through the 2011 calls in health research, the European Union is expected to provide funding in grants to support research and innovation in order to improve health and foster competitiveness in Europe.

The newsletter includes information on the involvement of PFPS Champions at IAPO’s 4th Global Patients Congress in Istanbul, Turkey earlier this year and gives an update on PFPS projects from around the globe.

Medical devices are indispensable in health care delivery as tools for prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. However, despite the exponential growth of scientific and technological development, availability of and access to appropriate and affordable health technologies in low- and middle-income countries are still insufficient. The WHO has produced a list of innovative technologies that address global health concerns based on two criteria: commercialized products or products which are commercialisable and products in a non-commercialized or a non-commercialisable stage.
