Our members are patients' organizations working at the international, regional, national and local levels to represent and support patients, their families and carers. A patient is a person with any chronic disease, illness, syndrome, impairment or disability.



World Health Organizations (WHO) Sixty-fifth World Health Assembly (WHA) – Geneva, Switzerland – 21-26 May 2012

In May, IAPO will be attending the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Sixty-fifth World Health Assembly (WHA). At the WHA, IAPO will be following agenda items on:

  • Prevention and control of non-communicable diseases
  • Substandard/spurious/falsely-labelled/falsified/counterfeit medical products
  • Health systems and research

As a nongovernmental organization in official relations with WHO, IAPO is able to make statements on agenda items at the WHA. IAPO will be sharing the statements and press releases on the IAPO website and on IAPO's Facebook and Twitter pages. These will be shared following the delivery of the statements at the WHA.

 

IAPO Policy Briefing for Members on the World Health Organization’s Sixty-fifth World Health Assembly

On the 15 and 17 May 2012 IAPO will be holding a webinar to brief IAPO members on the upcoming World Health Organizations (WHO) Sixty-fifth World Health Assembly (WHA).

IAPO will hold the webinar at 15.00 BST on Tuesday 15 May which will be repeated on Thursday 17 May at 08.00 BST to ensure that all members have the opportunity to participate.

IAPO Latin America Regional Network Meeting – Mexico City, Mexico – 6-8 June 2012

In June, IAPO will hold a series of meetings in Latin America to bring together IAPO members and other patient groups from different countries and disease areas across Latin America and the Caribbean to establish communications and objectives for an active and empowered network. Through a day and a half of workshops a defined shortlist of practical objectives for the IAPO Latin American regional network, as agreed by workshop participants, will be developed. IAPO will also hold a multi-stakeholder seminar on the afternoon of 7 June which will focus on the two key issues of non-communicable diseases and patient safety.
Capacity Building: Alliances and partnerships

Partnerships and alliances with healthcare stakeholders and other relevant organizations are essential for patient groups to achieve their aims and objectives. IAPO believes that effective collaboration at all levels, with active partnerships between patients’ and other organizations, is essential to achieving patient-centred healthcare.
International Thalassaemia Day 2012

On 8 May 2012, IAPO member, Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF), will celebrate International Thalassaemia Day 2012 and will hold a press conference with the theme ‘Patients’ Rights Revisited’. TIF highlighted that International Thalassaemia Day not only gives an opportunity to remember the Thalassaemia patients who are no longer with us but also enables the celebration of all those patients who are alive and fighting every day for their right to a better quality of life.
European Medicines Agency (EMA): Towards a robust global framework for conduct and oversight of clinical trials

EMA have published a reflection paper, with practical guidance on the assurance of ethical and GCP standards, in the conduct of clinical trials included in marketing authorisation applications submitted in the EU. In October 2010, IAPO responded to an EMA consultation on this subject and will be reviewing this reflection paper to evaluate how this fits in with our recommendations.
European Patients’ Forum: A voice to tackle health inequalities in EU healthcare

IAPO often works in collaboration with the European Patients’ Forum (EPF) and both organizations regularly support the other on important healthcare issues. These issues have included patient involvement, Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and patient safety. This month we would like to share more information on EPF and their current areas of work.
IAPO responds to World Health Organization discussion papers on non-communicable diseases (NCDs)

At the UN High Level Meeting on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases, the UN General Assembly adopted a Political Declaration which outlined action to be taken by the UN, WHO and Member States to prevent and control NCDs. Following this Declaration, WHO has developed discussion papers that explored the implementation of the Political Declaration through multisectoral action and a global monitoring framework for NCDs.
1st European Conference on Patient Empowerment – Copenhagen, Denmark – 11-12 April 2012

IAPO Board Member, Robert Johnstone, joined the Danish Minister of Health, Astrid Krag, and the Director of the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe, Zsuzanna Jakab, in giving an opening address at the 1st European Conference on Patient Empowerment. The conference explored the contribution of patient and citizen empowerment to the future of health and social care in Europe.
10th European Generic Medicines Association International Symposium on Biosimilar Medicines – London, UK – 19-20 April 2012

Rebecca Buckley, IAPO Project Officer, recently attended the 10th European Generic Medicines Association (EGA) International Symposium on Biosimilar Medicines. The main outcome of the Symposium a call for global development of biosimilars, to ensure that patients worldwide will have access to affordable and safe medicines.
