The World Health Organization's Safe Surgery Saves Lives initiative was formally launched on 25 June 2008 at the WHO Regional Office for the Americas (AMRO/PAHO) in Washington, D.C.  At the event, the WHO launched a new safety checklist for surgical teams to use in operating theatres, as part of a major drive to make surgery safer around the world.

IAPO responds to European Commission Consultations on Patient Safety and Counterfeit Medicines

In April and May 2008, IAPO submitted responses to two European Commission consultations. These were on a legal proposal to combat counterfeit medicines for human use and patient safety in Europe.
